Most wine aficionados shudder at the thought of choosing a wine to accompany a spicy dish- the hotter the food, the harder the pairing. Fortunately at the Pearl of the Orient East, you can breathe a sigh of relief- the work here is done for you, with the added benefits of selection and (gasp!) affordability. We ordered a glass each of Chilean Santa Rita Merlot and the Argentinean Trapiche Pinot Noir, both priced normally at a mere $5 per glass. But, normal is so boring. (Hence, the creation of Ladies’ Night Cleveland.) Not coincidentally, we were here for Tuesday Ladies’ Night- two drinks for the price of one. (There’s nothing more delightful than a guilt-free second round, gratis!) Despite the best buy, we were both impressed by the selection. Each wine beautifully complimented our extra-spicy entrees, with neither wine becoming dominated by the heat. Other types of alcoholic drinks were also included in the two-for-one special, including a broad assortment of cocktails and brews. The imposing wine list was quite a nice surprise, but the real gem here was the cuisine.
We were enthralled by the Crunchy Beef (our server’s recommendation) and the Szechuan Beef. This was certainly some of the most scrumptious Chinese food that we have ever had the pleasure of consuming. Don’t take our word for it, though- the Pearl has received several awards for Best Chinese Restaurant in Cleveland by Northern Ohio Live and Cleveland Magazine. The prices are also surprisingly reasonable, costing little more than the going rate for subpar Chinese takeout. Service was friendly, food was prompt, and the contemporary Chinese décor was inviting. The miniature library towards the front of the restaurant endowed a sense of studiousness. Overall, we could not have been more pleased. To the Pearl, we raise not one glass, but five- for our highest recommendation!
