Review by Rachel

The Cleveland Playhouse has proudly served as a cultural landmark in Cleveland ever since her birth in 1915. With her Girls’ Night Out at the Theater events, the creative flair is not just limited to the performance.  This imaginative event pairs a pre-show reception with a ticket to the night’s show, all for thirty bucks, which is nine dollars lower than the price of a ticket alone! (Kudos to the sponsors of this event who support art and culture in Cleveland- Cakes by Phill, Ladies Who Launch, Bacardi, and One Walnut.)  This multifaceted event combines a menagerie of delights; there are woman-oriented vendors, mini-spa services, cocktails, and hors d’oeuvres from local eateries.  We attended the January 24th Girls’ Night Out with the performance of George Gershwin Alone, a one-man show starring the exceedingly talented Hershey Felder.  An accomplished pianist, actor, and composer, Mr. Felder also authored the play.  We at Ladies’ Night Cleveland have been to many, many plays in our years, but never have we seen an audience more captivated.  Gleeful humming and lip synching was prevalent throughout the play, which turned to an all-out sing-a-long during the interactive finale, complete with requests from those who could reminisce.  (One of us even caught an elbow of a fellow audience member attempting to direct the score from her mid-row seat.)  It appeared that most in attendance knew every last song to a tee, although the majority could have attended an opening night of an actual Gershwin performance.  (We found that lyrical capability was directly proportional to age.  We didn’t fend so well at LNC!)

The night started off in a large hallway off the Drury Theater atrium.  Vendors and sponsors setup shop to one side, with cozy tables on the other.  We picked up our tickets, and headed back towards the party, already eyeing the appetizers at the One Walnut table (we also highly recommend their Equal Opportunity Happy Hour special).  Fighting off gluttonous instincts, we each selected a few small hors d’oeuvres, then proceeded to the second food table, Cakes by Phill, for dessert.  A few bites of the various appetizer’s at One Walnut inspired us to make dinner reservations there in short time.  (Do we see another Review by Rachel in the near future? We certainly hope so!)  We also cashed in our one drink ticket each for a Bacardi sponsored Cosmopolitan and Appletini.  After we nibbled awhile, we perused the handful of vendors, sampling delicious honey concoctions from Karen’s Apiary, and looking at the wares at Creative Memories and Savvy Boutique.  We eagerly signed up for the chair back massage list at Wellness Evolution Spa.  A short wait later, we were much refreshed thanks to the commanding, talented hands of our masseuse.  We mingled a little longer until the lights began dimming, the universal signal for “sit your keister down.”  We proceeded to the entrance to watch the never-ending line of people pour into the Drury theater doors, knowing that this sold-out show was the hit of the night.  We ladies at LNC will be headed back for the next Girls’ Night Out at the Theater on Thursday, March 27th for Pride and Prejudice.  If you can’t make that one, check out www.ClevelandPlayhouse.com for the next season of ladies night events, TBA.  Hope to see you there!
